Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire (STCB) congratulates Bondigro Supermarket for taking a bold step in banning the use of plastic bags on Bonaire. The supermarket announced the ban of plastic (shopping) bags earlier this month, and will be ‘plastic-free’ as of January 1st, 2018.
In addition to restricting the use of plastic bags on Bonaire, Bondigro Supermarket also announced that the proceeds from the sale of paper bags at the cash registers will be donated to STCB.
STCB’s Manager Mabel Nava: “We are very excited about Bondigro’s initiative to ban plastic bags! Sea turtles often mistake plastic bags as food and ingest it. This can cause blockages within their digestive system, and eventually death. We hope that other supermarkets and stores on Bonaire are inspired by Bondigro’s ban on plastic bags, and will follow suit.”
