Last week Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire, in cooperation with Openbaar Lichaam Bonaire and WILDCONSCIENCE BV, continued its efforts to protect nesting sea turtles at Te Amo Beach by placing boulders and informative signs, and attaching palm leaves to the new fence, which was installed in the beginning of August.
The placement of boulders and signs is intended to further discourage people from driving on the beach as well as informing the general public about the do’s and don’ts at Te Amo Beach. STCB volunteers moreover dedicated a morning of their time to attach palm leaves to the new fence, thereby creating a more natural barrier. The palm leaves also reduce light pollution from the airport, thus preventing disorientation of nesting turtles.
These activities mark the next step in STCB’s involvement in the Ecological Restoration of Lac and the South of Bonaire, a project that is coordinated by the Openbaar Lichaam Bonaire and funded with the so called ‘natuurgelden’ made available by the Dutch government.
Additional activities on Te Amo Beach that will be carried out by STCB in the near future include planting more vegetation alongside the fence and placing kliko facilities. STCB will furthermore take steps in the South aimed at protecting nesting sea turtles in this area.
