Ghost net

Press Release STINAPA

A concerned citizen has surrendered a net that he found in the ocean in the south of Bonaire.

Ghost nets are abandoned fishing net which are very dangerous for sea creatures that get entangled in them and may drown. This attentive person found a seagull and a sea turtle stuck in the net and was just in time to save them from a cruel death.

The mesh size of this net was smaller than what the law allows. The mesh size of a net must be greater than 2.5cm so that smaller fish get the chance to escape and are able to reproduce and sustain a healthy fish population.

Someone always has to be present when casting their net to ensure that no protected animal species get stuck in the net and drown.

STINAPA is grateful to have watchful eyes out there in cases like this.
