Feature Story Xp Bonaire Island Life
In June, 2022, Dick Bos, Owner and Chef of the oceanfront restaurant, Breeze’n Bites, officially welcomed the new co-owner, Frank Rustman. Breeze’n Bites is located close to the Hato roundabout at the Den Laman condominiums. The restaurant is situated right at the oceanfront, overlooking Klein Bonaire. With the palm leaves rustling in the wind and the little waves splashing on the small beach, you are relaxed in an instant.
The Owners
Dick officially became owner of the restaurant in 2015, the exact location he worked at as an employee, when he first came to Bonaire in 1990.
Dick has a long history in the hospitality industry that started at his dad’s ice cream shop at age 9. He has achieved his childhood dreams of being a chef on a cruise ship travelling the world and becoming the owner of an oceanfront restaurant on the Caribbean island of Bonaire.
After many years of running and cooking at the restaurant on his own, Dick decided that it was time to welcome a partner into the business who could add some manpower and proficiency.
“Frank and I know each other for many years, we even worked together for some time. I know his vision, know-how and work ethics. We kept in touch over the years and the agreement was made quickly when it was the right time.”
Frank first came to the island to work in the early 90’s where he met Dick, who worked at Den Laman, the former restaurant at the Breeze’n Bites location. Even though Frank’s career continued in the European Netherlands, he came to visit the island on vacations and each time he left Bonaire with the desire to return one day.
The restaurant business was growing at the same time Dick’s family was growing, and after many years, Dick had the feeling of “tunnel vision” and wanted to add some real and fresh expertise. After many years working in the Netherlands in various restaurants as a chef, Frank was ready for some change. Because the two had remained in contact over the years, and had a good understanding of each other personally and business wise, the decision was made very quickly.
Breeze’n Bites update
Of course, fusing the two chefs together comes with some refreshing changes. The duo recently invested in some kitchen upgrades and introduced a new menu that will be updated frequently to keep it fresh and exciting.
Flammkuchen
A new menu item will be introduced soon, Flammkuchen, also known as tarte flambé. Flammkuchen originated in the German-French Alsace-Mosel region and is a thin crusted bread with a light white cheese or crème fraiche and various other toppings. It is great as a snack to share, or even eat it as a main course by yourself.
Burger Night
Burger Night with a selection of burgers, a pasta and fish special and Happy Hour drinks at an affordable price has become a local favorite. Overlooking the Caribbean Sea, while talking to the dive professionals, and enjoying a cold drink and a tasty burger during sunset is a great experience.
Happy Hour
The daily happy hour takes place at 5 – 6 pm
Lobster Night
On Saturday night, Breeze’n Bites serves local or USA Lobster depending on the season.
