The 2016 Adopt-A-Nest program has come to a successful end: all 25 adopted nests have hatched, saving a grand total of 2446 baby turtles! Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire would like to congratulate each and every company, that supported their work by adopting a nest, with this great outcome. Congratulations!
STCB launched the pilot project ‘Adopt-A-Nest’ in 2015, thereby offering local companies the opportunity to protect the endangered sea turtles of Bonaire by adopting a nest. The pilot turned out to be a great success: 7 nests were adopted, saving a total of 693 hatchlings!
As a result of this success, STCB decided to continue the Adopt-A-Nest program in 2016. This year, however, to celebrate STCB’s 25th anniversary, a total number of 25 sea turtle nests were made available for adoption. Local companies including resorts, dive schools and financial institutions, were very excited to join this innovative program and soon all 25 nests were adopted.
The first adopted nest was laid in May on Klein Bonaire, and the 2016 Adopt-A-Nest program came to an end on September 16th, when the last adopted nest hatched on Te Amo Beach. With their support, local companies enabled STCB to relocate nests that were in danger of drowning and to rescue newborn turtles that became wrapped in roots during hatching. Their support moreover allowed STCB to continue the popular volunteer Beachkeeper program, and permitted them to collect data that will help STCB to protect nests better as well as reveal the health status of Bonaire’s sea turtles.
STCB would like to thank each company that has supported their mission by adopting a sea turtle nest. Together we saved 2446 baby turtles!
