Restaurant Review - Stadscafé Het Consulaat

XpBonaire IslandLife Bonaire

It’s been almost five years since Stadscafé Het Consulaat opened its doors, and in that time, this cozy garden restaurant has become a beloved fixture on Bonaire. Owner Jeroen van den Boom was among the first on the island to introduce the shared dining concept, a tradition he has maintained to this day. Shared dining is perfect for nearly any occasion, whether it's a family dinner where young and old can enjoy a variety of dishes, a night out with friends, or a business meeting.

Recently, Chef Wilco Hoekman took over the kitchen with fresh enthusiasm. While maintaining the restaurant's signature style, he has also introduced his own touches. Now there's a daily special for US $14.95, which includes a beer or soda. The restaurant is primarily set in a garden around a spacious bar, but indoor seating is also available, including air-conditioning. In short, Stadscafé Het Consulaat offers a suitable seating option for everyone.

Our latest visit began with us choosing a spot in the garden, where we were promptly served our drinks. One standout was the beautifully crafted and delicious Espresso Martini. The menu offers a wide selection, and since nearly all dishes are suitable as either appetizers or main courses, we started with Burrata with watermelon and a Bloody Mary dressing, paired with Vitello Tonnato, which is thinly sliced veal with a tuna mayonnaise. If there was anything to critique, it would be the presentation of the two dishes, but the flavor was impeccable. The Burrata was an excellent combination with the watermelon and Bloody Mary dressing.

For our second course, we chose the Coq au Vin and Red Snapper, accompanied by a delightful Ripasso, a red Valpolicella wine. The French classic of chicken, vegetables, and bacon in a red wine sauce was meticulously prepared. We learned that Chef Wilco brines the chicken before cooking, a technique that imparts remarkable tenderness to the meat, making every bite a small celebration. The Red Snapper was served on its skin with fried chorizo, a beurre blanc sauce, and mashed potatoes. We can confidently say that the shared dining concept greatly appealed to us, especially with the four delicious dishes we enjoyed so far.

No meal is complete without dessert, so we ordered Tiramisu and a lava cake to finish. Both desserts were exceptionally tasty. The Tiramisu was not overly sweet, and the lava cake was fresh from the oven. Our conclusion is that Stadscafé Het Consulaat has successfully maintained its initial enthusiasm for pleasing its guests. With an extensive selection of wines, beers, whiskeys, and other spirits, this place truly offers something for everyone.

An Inviting Ambiance

Stadscafé Het Consulaat provides an inviting and relaxed ambiance, making it a perfect spot for any dining occasion. The garden setting offers a charming and natural atmosphere, while the indoor seating options, including an air-conditioned private room, cater to those who prefer a cooler environment. The spacious bar serves as a central hub, offering a wide array of drinks and creating a social and lively environment.

Culinary Excellence

Chef Wilco Hoekman’s influence in the kitchen is evident in the quality and creativity of the dishes. The daily specials and his menu changes reflect his culinary expertise and passion. The flexibility of the menu, allowing diners to choose their own order of dishes, adds a personal touch to the dining experience.

Shared Dining Concept

The shared dining concept is executed flawlessly at Stadscafé Het Consulaat. It encourages interaction and a communal dining experience that is both fun and engaging. The variety of dishes available ensures that there is something to please every palate, making it an ideal choice for group dining.
